Invasive Asian Lady Beetles in Ontario – What They Look Like and Where They Nest

Multicoloured Asian Lady Beetle

Appearance: 5–8 mm long, oval-shaped with color variations from yellow-orange to red. May have many, few, or no black spots. Characteristic black "M"-shaped marking behind the head.

Habitat: Outdoors on crops, trees, and buildings in summer; gathers on sunlit walls and enters buildings in fall to overwinter.

Bahaviour: Forms large indoor clusters in attics, wall voids, and ceilings. Emits a yellowish fluid and foul odor when disturbed.

Risk to Humans: Does not bite but can cause minor allergic reactions or stain surfaces. Considered a nuisance pest.

Interesting Fact: Introduced to North America for aphid control, but it outcompetes native lady beetles and can invade homes in large numbers.
